Preventing Tooth Decay with Dental Sealants
One of the most common places we see cavities is in the deep grooves, pits and fissures of the back teeth. Why? Because they are so narrow, even toothbrush bristles can’t keep them clean. Thankfully there’s a simple, non-invasive way for Allure Dental Center patients to reduce their risk of tooth decay while also improving their oral hygiene with the application of dental sealants.
Dental sealants are preventive restorations that cover the deep grooves of your back teeth. They take less than 5 minutes to apply and no drilling or shots are needed!
How Do Sealants Work?
Dental sealants are like thin layers of plastic that are bonded to your enamel. They coat the grooves and pits so that it is easy to clean the tooth with a toothbrush.
Our pediatric patients are great candidates for sealants, as many cavities develop during early childhood when proper oral hygiene may be lacking.
Because sealants are not like fillings, they are not permanent. A sealant can be pulled off by eating very sticky food, so avoiding those types of foods is important. Most of our sealants will last for several years and may be completely covered by your dental insurance plan. Ask about adding them into your next preventive cleaning and oral screening visit!
