Braces are a type of orthodontics that help straighten teeth, correct bite alignments, and other dental issues by applying pressure on your teeth for an extended period. If you or your child require braces, we would be happy to provide that for you at Allure Dental Center! In addition to traditional metal braces, we also offer clear Invisalign braces, ClearCorrect braces, and various dental appliances. To give you a better idea about dental braces and what they entail, we have provided some answers to common questions below.

Do braces fix teeth permanently?

While teeth can still shift after braces are removed, braces straighten teeth with results that are generally long-lasting. With that in mind, it is important to maintain healthy habits by taking care of your teeth after braces are removed to ensure your teeth remain straight and healthy.

Some healthy habits or maintenance options for keeping teeth straight after braces could include wearing a retainer, keeping regular appointments with your dentist, using a mouthguard at night especially if you deal with bruxism, or grinding your teeth as you sleep, and practicing good oral hygiene, which involves flossing once a day and brushing your teeth three times a day after meals.

What is a good age for braces?

The most common age that orthodontic patients have braces applied is between 14 and 20. With that being said, most orthodontists recommend that the best age range for having braces applied is between 10 and 14, as the jawbone is not fully developed at that point, allowing the teeth to shift easier and bite misalignments to be more easily corrected. Most orthodontists also recommend having an orthodontic evaluation for your child around the age of seven.

At the same time, braces can be safely applied for individuals at almost any age, whether you are a child, adolescent, or adult. As such, if you are in your twenties or middle age and considering braces, there is no time like the present to get them!

What are the advantages of braces?

Braces provide long-term advantages to individuals who get them, including any and all of the following:

– Feel more confident in your smile
– Help with speech impairments or difficulties with chewing food
– Improve digestion, as your teeth can chew your food into smaller pieces
– Fewer cavities
– Less grinding and chipping of teeth
– Makes brushing, cleaning, and flossing your teeth an easier and more effective process
– Prevent tooth decay and jawbone erosion
– Reduced risk of periodontal disease or injury from protruding teeth

How long do braces take to start working?

The length of time it takes for braces to start working varies according to a few different factors, including the patient’s age, bone density, and the extent of the misalignment. With that being said, most patients start to notice initial improvements within four to six weeks of getting braces applied. Each time you switch to a new Invisalign tray or have your braces adjusted or tightened, your teeth should be slightly straighter than the last time. Traditional braces are typically adjusted once every four to ten weeks, while Invisalign trays are switched out every one to two weeks. On average, the total time that most patients have braces is between 18 and 24 months, although this varies with each individual.
